32) James Tooke born 1583 of St. Albans and Hertford died 1655 married Dorothy Gray born before 1584 Hertfordshire died 1655. Both are buried at the church in Essenden, Hertfordshire;

33) James Tooke was born about 1600 in Hertfordshire, England and died 02 February 1662/3 in the Isle of Wight County, Virginia. He came to Virginia 1621 on the George. His wife is not known. On 12 January 1626, James Tooke was granted permission to remove from the "Maine without James City and to plant at Mulberry Island", just south of James City (Jamestowne) on the east side of the James River. In 1635, James Tooke was living at Pashbyhaes in James City County. By November 1640 he had patented 900 acres of land in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. He was a member of the House of Burgess 1639/40 and again in 1646. He was a Commissioner, Justice and Clerk of Court for Isle of Wight County. His will was written 1659 and was proved 1662 in Isle of Wight County. He is a qualifying ancestor for the Jamestowne Society. He had several children: three documented-Thomas Tooke, and Dorothy Tooke who married John Harvey, Governor of North Carolina in 1680; and William Tooke mentioned in the will of James Tooke;

(While some authors have questioned the ancestors of James Tooke of Virginia, the renown English genealogist and author Noel Currer-Briggs has researched the Carter family and the Tooke family of Hertfordshire, and has stated without question James Tooke of Virginia was one of the nine sons of James Tooke of Hertford, Auditor of the Courts of Wards and Liveries.
